About

L’Oréal Research & Innovation is launching a Startup Challenge – the L’Oréal Innovation Runway – to partner with early-stage startups and small enterprises in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

Research and Innovation is at the heart of L’Oréal’s philosophy. Startups constantly invent new technologies and L’Oréal is looking for startups with unique solutions in the areas of Personalised Beauty, Smart Materials, Natural Materials, Delivery Technologies, and Digital Technologies.

This multi-disciplinary approach will allow us to co-develop new solutions that go beyond the traditional cosmetic approaches, to reinvent the next generation of beauty products.

L’Oréal is partnering with Startup SG, NUS Enterprise and SPRING Singapore to launch its inaugural Startup Challenge in Singapore and across the Asia-Pacific region.

Prizes And Incentives

Participants can win the opportunity to work with L’Oréal, gain access to mentors and industry networks through L’Oréal, NUS Enterprise, and SPRING Singapore, as well as potentially receive S$5000 cash prizes and a S$50,000 Startup SG grant.

Potential access to L’Oréal’s century-old R&D expertise

  • Opportunities for conducting a pilot study with our APAC hubs.
  • Developing longer term strategic partnerships.

Mentorship and Industry Network

  • Exposure to NUS Enterprise and local network of industry partners, companies, investors and startup mentors
  • Startup boot-camp or targeted mentorship sessions by NUS Enterprise for startups selected to be in the semi-finals

Startup SG Grant

  • One winner stands to win a $50,000 Startup SG grant, sponsored by SPRING Singapore. T&Cs apply.
  • In addition, both winners will be fast-tracked to the Grand Finals of Slingshot@SWITCH.

Financial Award

  • Each winner will receive a prize award of S$5,000. 2 winners will be selected.
  • No equity is taken.

  • Opportunity to pitch to a wide audience
  • Gain faster understanding of industry challenges and needs
  • Unique insights for the shortlisted proposals
  • Increase prospects for co-creation or co-development activities

Access to Shared Spaces

  • Wet lab, prototyping lab, workspace and desk

Challenge Categories

Novel, Smart Materials

We are seeking new materials with novel properties, such as those that change their properties upon different external stimulus.

Green Materials

We are seeking naturally-derived and/or renewable materials with novel properties.

Delivery Technologies

We are seeking technologies that can enhance and/or control selectively the delivery of active molecules through skin or different elements of skin, scalp or hair.

Personalised Beauty

We are seeking predictive solutions for evaluation of skin/ hair for the purposes of providing personalised treatments for consumers.

Digital Technologies

We are seeking technologies which enable consumers to enjoy new experiences when using hair, skin, makeup products or enhancing retail experiences.
